IRINA WERNING
Irina Werning made a portfolio of work to recreate photos taken in childhood, she did this by using the same or very similar clothing a backgrounds to re-make the photos. By doing this, Werning displays how much or how little a person has changed over a period of time. Most of these photographs were taken using natural light to avoid an artificial outcome |
In this photograph, Irina Werning has attempted to recreate an old school photograph, for this she had to use multiple spotlights and a plain dull backdrop to mimic the same set up. Although Werning has captured the changes in facial features from one model to the later version of himself; she has kept the same clothes. This could insinuate that when you are feeling nostalgic you often imagine yourself back in the same situation through fond memories. By using this set up, the wrinkles on the face in the second photograph are emphasized, this implies the theme of change and aging with time as the man no longer looks as youthful. I think this technique works really well to show change however it would be difficult to match the exact clothing and background for the second photo.

I chose this photograph because there is a strong contrast between the past and the more modern version of the same person, the tattoos and piercings display the idea of alternate life choices because rather than staying continuous, the model has chosen to alter her appearance. Consequently, the smooth and un-changed skin of the toddler portrays an image of innocence in comparison to the woman on the right. Moreover, this photograph insinuates a growing acceptance for new technologies and body modifications. Both of the photos are light and there are only a few shadows down the right side of the model, this further highlights the innocence of the child point of view. Finally, the woman is pictured gazing away from the camera, giving the impression that she is daydreaming or absent, much like the mind of a child.
