PAINTED FACE
EQUIPMENT
Paint (Teal, pink, yellow and purple)
Black backdrop
Nikon D3100 DSLR
Model (Hannah)
METHODOLOGY
I got the idea for this set of images from the work of Alexander Kohklov, a photographer that colaborated with an artist to paint thw faces of his models to reinvent them as 2 dimensional objects. He used opaque paint and asked his models to close their eyes so as not to disrupt the pattern. Like Kohklov, I used opaque paint and my model kept her eyes closed however, I used more free-flowing strokes of various colours to create a more serene outcome - as oppose to his clean-cut patterns. Furthermore, the colours of this shoot were inspired by the film Avatar directed by James Cameron (2009), in that my intention was to paint my model with galaxy themed colours (Teal, light pink, yellow flicks and deep purple) in order to create a fantasy effect.
I used a black sheet as a back drop and I attempted to remove as many of the creases as possible so that the background of my image would be a solid black colour. To add to this, I had minimal lighting from one bulb that was positioned at the top left and slightly in front of the model, as a result, the the light catches the prominent areas such as the collar bones, the raised area of the chest, the top lip, the bridge of the nose and the cheek. Alternatively, the positioning of the lighting means that the right side of the photograph is left in darkness to add to the mysterious and hidden nature of the image.
I am pleased with this final result however, if I was to do this shoot again, I would be more careful with painting the entire area around the eye as closely as possible to avoid any remaining bare areas.
PHOTOSHOP
I was very pleased with the raw images of this shoot and thought that they only required minor adjustments in Photoshop; I used dodge & burn to exaggerate the highlights, focusing on the prominent areas of the photo such as her collar bones, her philtral ridge (upper lip), cheekbones and the bridge of her nose. To add to this, I used the burn tool to darken the background to create a more intense contrast. Finally, I used the spot heal tool to cover the flecks where the paint was thin or had peeled off slightly.
