MILK & DYE
NOTES:
For this photo shoot I worked with a classmate to create a mini-project, we decided on the technique of milk and dye because we liked the explosion of colour and the snapshot of the movement that they made through the air.
For this practical we used a black backdrop behind a speaker, which we used to play a song with a very deep base to cause vibrations, this was then covered by a layer of clingfilm. We then used a pipette to drop the mixtures of milk and various dye colours onto the speaker. To take the photo we needed to separate flash which we placed on a small gorilla pod(We used folded black card to funnel the light towards the speaker). At first it was difficult to time the camera to the right parts of the song when the vibrations were biggest in order to make the dye splash furthest however we soon realised that if we put the camera on continuous shutter we got good results. After this, we wanted to develop the idea of colours spreading out further so we dropped inks into vases of water to capture the spiralling effect.
I am very proud of our final result however I think if I could re-do this experiment I would try using multiple speakers at the same time to create patterns with the milk and dye.
