VIKRAM KUSHWAH
Vikram Kushwah created a portfolio of work entitled ‘Memoirs of a Lost Time’, the collection features a range of models in child-like situations and in each photograph, the subject is gazing away to create the impression that they are looking for something lost, perhaps their youth. The photos are given a hazy and faded filter to add a dream-like effect to resemble the rose-tinted view of a naïve child.

In this photograph, there is a model; with a mature face and decorated with make-up yet she stares out of the window with the longing of a child who wishes to go outside. In this way it provokes memories of being stuck inside on a rainy day or being refined to a school classroom when there’s snow outside. Compared to Kushwah’s other work, this is different because the majority of his photos were taken from far away to show more of the person’s surroundings however this photo places full focus on the facial expression and emotion of the person. The way that this photograph uses a window to separate the lady from the outside world could resemble the way that once childhood is left behind; adults often find themselves trapped in an office, far from where they dreamed they’d be as a child. To add to this, the photographer has used a black and white filter to further emphasize the ‘old fashioned’ factors of this image. I think that I could use this photograph to help me because I like the use of windows or separation as symbolism for leaving behind a childhood.

This photograph features a young man sitting on a beach with a model boat. The beach setting has positive connotations which serve to remind viewers of summer holiday trips to the beach to buy ice-creams and sun bathe. Alternatively, the photographer has dressed his model in a smart shirt and trousers to give the impression that he is more sophisticated; this furthers the sense that he is remembering his youth. The toy boat appeals to the stereotypical 7-10 year old boy however it’s placed on the sand rather than in the sea, this could symbolize how the young boy has left his old surroundings as he’s grown up like a boat taken from water. To add to this, Kushwah has used a grayscale filter to give the effect of an ‘old fashioned’ photo. I think I could take inspiration from this photograph by the use of the filter and the use of setting to create an aged effect.
