MICHAEL BOSANKO
Michael Bosanko is a night time photographer who specialises in using long exposures to paint with light. Bosanko has a keen interest in travel and exploring and consequently, almost all his work is set outside in intriguing landscapes; the majority are natural. His work has strong links to the elements (Earth, Wind, Fire and water) and so his images commonly feature trees, rivers and other plants, also commonly in his works, Bosanko takes inspiration from films and books for his comedic-style cartoon characters in amusing positions. Bosanko usually captures his photos so that the background is very dark but not completely pitch black to give his drawn characters a setting to interact with.
In this photograph, Michael Bosanko has used a long exposure and violet torches to create a city scene in a field. In this way, he has created a contrast between the natural landscape and the straight-edged buildings. For this photo, Bosanko would have waited until it was pitch black however the long exposure gives the effect of an evening shot. I like the way that Bosanko has created this drawing purely with lights rather than incorporating his surroundings and I think that I can use this technique in my own work.
Bosanko has used light painting to create the appearance of a twisted tree, contained within a dark tunnel, in this way, a contrast is presented between the harsh, solid walls of the tunnel and the curved, natural roots of the tree. Furthermore, Bosanko has used a flashing light to make fire-fly like spots in the background which add to the fantasy theme of the picture. In addition, I like the way that the receding tunnel adds depth to the photo as it leads away to a vanishing point. The focus of this photo is the ability of the nature to thrive in the seemingly barren environment.
In this photo, strip lights have been used to give the effect of a ribbon-like movement when used with a long shutter speed. The photograph is set on a long, straight road, as a result, the lights mimic the busy rush of cars along that motorway whilst the vortex shape on the left hand side of the photograph implements a futuristic theme. Furthermore, the way that the background is plain and under-exposed emphasizes the vibrancy of the lights in the foreground to make them the sole focus of the photo.
